I was in Las Vegas this week and stayed at the Bellagio, from my room I could see the CityCenter (http://www.citycenter.com/) development. When MGM started the project it was hailed as a type of urban landscape in the middle of the strip. It has high density hotels, condos, retail, offices and a casino. The project even includes mass transit, well kinda. From what I heard when I was there that a condo that was selling for $850,000 during the height of housing speculation craze is now selling for $200,000. The development it self looks great in person and I am excited to see what actually happens when it finally opens. It does move the Las Vegas Strip from tacky theme and faux-elegance, to a more mature and better looking skyline. If this was built ten years ago, the project would have succeeded, now I do not see the demand for anything this big.

CityCenter: Las Vegas' big gamble

Sin City bets its future on a game-changing $8.5 billion complex of hotels, shops, restaurants and nightclubs.

After just a day in Las Vegas' spanking new CityCenter, I was crystal clear about one thing: This was no place for anyone on a budget.

Strolling the promenade on a Friday night, I contemplated my dinner options. I thought there might be a good deal at the buffet, but the $40 price tag gave me sticker shock. I studied the menu at a restaurant called American Fish. The bigeye tuna looked appealing; the price -- $38 -- not so much.

New mega-resort CityCenter grabs attention on the buzzing Las Vegas Strip with sleek architecture, eye-catching artwork and an unusual disinterest in gambling (only one hotel among its three has a casino).

The Las Vegas Monorail runs by the 4,004-room Aria Resort & Casino, anchor of the 67-acre CityCenter mega-resort.
